How this calculator works

Everything is converted to a monthly figure: monthly amounts are used directly, and annual amounts are divided by 12 so irregular costs are spread evenly. Your surplus (disposable income) is simply total monthly income minus total monthly expenses, and expenses are grouped by category so you can see exactly where the money goes.

Your savings rate is anything you've filed under Savings & Investments as a percentage of total income. Advisers often suggest aiming for around 20% — see the FAQs below for the 50/30/20 rule and how to build an emergency fund.

Actual expenses and income may vary significantly from month to month. The calculator does not account for unexpected expenses, changes in income, or economic factors that may affect your budget.
